Hout Bay Music Project

Hout Bay Music Project

Hout Bay Music Project Members of the senior performing project are rapidly gaining a reputation for quality performances at concerts and functions. They have also performed for other successful projects, such as the Jikeleza Dancers at the Artscape Theatre.

“Ranging from enthusiastic to irrepressible, the Hout Bay Music Project Strings is one of my favourite bands in the world! To come so far in just four years they must have put in a lot of hard work. You couldn’t do it any other way but, even so, their excitement and enjoyment are infectious.” David Juritz commenting during his busking tour in 2007.

This thriving project was founded in 2003 by violinist Leanne Dolman who identified a need for recreational facilities and extra-mural activities for children in the historically disadvantaged communities of Hangberg Harbour Village and Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, near Cape Town, South Africa.

Daily classes cover violin, cello, double bass, marimba, drums, singing, dance, and life skill guidance. We currently provide formal string instrument training for 80 children and are extremely proud of our 100% pass rate. All practical and theory examinations are conducted through the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music in the United Kingdom, the world’s top authority on musical assessment.
