Keke Phoofolo

Keke Phoofolo, Gospel sensation Keke, real name Kekeletso Phoofolo, was born and raised in Pimville, Soweto. A 20-something singer once had a zeal to be in the military but music took over that aspiration and started his career with Zoe Gospel Music in 1994 as a backing vocalist and as a result competed at the “Shell Road to Fame” in Sun City 1997 as a soloist. Keke never limited himself; in 1998 he found a place in the kwaito industry with the group called Kom-Kom. He then got the opportunity to go on tour with Benjamin Dube 1999 before joining “Joyous Celebration 5” in 2000-2001 as one of the choirs lead singers. Doing the lead on the song ‘Jo Ke Mohlolo-Hlolo’ also gave him the opportunity to work with the male group Redeemed. While searching for his niche, he worked with various artists including Bheki Mseleku, Winston Mankunku and Umoja. This led to a call from the Queen of Swaziland to run and produce a “live” recording of Redemption Choir 2001-2004 giving him the chance to produce more projects in the neighbouring country. In 2006 he decided to pursue a solo career which dints go wrong.

The success of his first album called Restoration paved the way for his second album ‘Revival’ which was a ‘Live’ DVD recording at the “Vaal University of Technology”. On REVIVAL, Keke’s says ‘We all have the opportunity to have what we want, and what we need to revive our mind set. Emotions must be dealt with because we have our freedom and Africa has more than what it needs. We should come out of the beggar mentality. This is not the time to look back because if we do, we will not see tomorrow’. The DVD consists of church folks favourite songs; the award winning singer who has launched his third album has this to say “I am humbled by my musical success. I was also amazed by the success of my latest album Living Testimony, which has also received platinum status.” The DVD consists of my favourite songs such as Sefapano, I’m in love, I need your touch and Testimony to mention few of the best in his live album.

Blessed is the realm that awarded this man the opportunity to express his incomparable talent in the land of the living. Not only talent is circulating in his veins but also the power of God through his music that distinguishes him from other artists. When South Africa was weary of the same gospel tunes, Keke arrived and changed the paradigm, by taking church music to the youth the way he saw it fit. His flexibility on stage makes one wonder about gospel music as a genre usually associated with insipidness among his peers.
