Pier Terblanche

General Counsel Ma’aden

Pier is an international corporate (M&A) and commercial lawyer with a particular focus on the natural resources and energy sectors. Prior to joining Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden), a listed top 10 global mining company by market capitalization, in early 2018, he worked as in-house counsel at Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti and Emirates National Oil Company, practiced as equity partner at a leading international law firm, and served as global general counsel and company secretary of an industry-leading multinational. He has been based in the Middle East since 2002.

As General Counsel, Phosphate and Industrial Minerals at Ma’aden, Pier leads the legal function of Ma’aden’s primary business of “pit-to-port” phosphate mining, beneficiation, sales and export, consisting of several multi-billion dollar joint ventures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which includes one of the world’s largest phosphate production complexes, and Ma’aden’s Southern African based fertilizer and agricultural commodities manufacturing and distribution group of companies.

Pier graduated from the University of Pretoria with BLC and LLB degrees, holds a graduate diploma in compliance from Manchester Business School/International Compliance Association, and completed the Accelerated Management Program at Yale School of Management and Leadership in Corporate Counsel Program at Harvard Law School.

He is recognized by Legal 500’s GC Powerlist Middle East 2022 as a leading general counsel in the region.
