Thembi Seete

Thembi Seete (born 1977) is a South African kwaito star and actress best known as one of the members of the kwaito supergroup Boom Shaka, from 1994-2000.

After the band broke up Seete simultaneously launched a solo music career and a career in acting.

She played a minor role in the 2000 feature film Hijack Stories, but first made her mark in the hard-hitting SABC1 drama series Yizo Yizo. She also sang the popular track Sure Ntombazana for the soundtrack to Yizo Yizo 2, which helped launch her solo music career.

Described as “fearless, talented, passionate and inspired” Thembi Seete is one of SA’s hardest working and dedicated entertainers. This multi-talented singer, actor and dancer first rose to fame more than ten years ago, making history as one of the first female kwaito artists when she joined the band Boom Shaka.

Their dedication to the craft became the stuff of legends, as they influenced the youth of South Africa with their look, dance and music. She has been gracing the cover of magazines ever since.

In 2001 Thembi released her debut solo album “Lollipop” which was a resounding success and was followed up by a second album Smatsatsa, featuring hits like Shayi Zandla and Mphate Kahle as well as featuring kwaito sensation Skwatta Kamp. A personal highlight of her solo career came when she was invited to perform at the Presidential Inauguration at the Union Buildings.

After a decision to branch out into acting, Thembi won the role of Lerato in the TV series Gazlam, which she played for the first two seasons. Her first major TV role came when she secured the role of Hazel on SABC 1’s hard hitting local drama Yizo Yizo. 2005 saw Thembi playing the part of Pumla in the made-for-tv movie Crossing the Line. In 2006 she won the part of Penny Moloi in SABC 1’s local soccer drama Zone 14.

A part she played through the first and second season. She has also graced the big screens with roles in movies like Fools and Hijack Stories. Thembi is currently a presenter on the hit TV music show Jika Majika where she shows off her passion for dancing.

At the moment she is working closely with Engen, making appearances at the openings of their new branches, motivating the staff and doing in-store promotions. She has also foundered a program called Suck the Money, an entrepreneurial initiative aimed at helping youth learn basic business skills and to earn their own money. Her very own perfume line is in the pipelines as well.

Thembi is getting ready to release her latest solo album called Dance is my Life, a project she is especially proud of as she was the executive producer for the album. Financing the production of the album herself, Thembi wanted to have control over the finished product and had the final say in everything from the songs to the sleeve.
